Down through history women have been fighting for their rights. Some might say that women have finally achieved equal rights now in the 20th century. But what about women’s rights when it comes to the child bearing year? Are women really in control of their fertility, pregnancy, labor and delivery and post-partum recovery? Or do they choose a care provider, and place the control in his/her hands, being left then to deal with unexpected outcomes, and unanswered questions? Are women truly being given full disclosure of risks, benefits and alternatives? Especially when it comes to the topic of cesarean birth and VBAC (Vaginal Birth after Cesarean)?
As a Certified Doula and Lamaze trained Childbirth Educator, I am constantly searching for good, evidence based information. I recently came across this article “Enforcing and Promoting the Rights of Women Seeking Vaginal Birth After Cesarean” by Katherine Prown, Ph.D. I hope you will read the entire article, and take the information to heart. Whether it effects you personally, or someone you love, I hope you will be challenged to speak up: to your care provider, your friends, your community. Change can happen one person at a time. If we all help just one woman learn their rights, and choose medical care that respects women and babies, we have done our part.
